Cook Islands

Rarotonga

Over 30+ years of friendship, the girls and I took advantage of some cheap flights to Rarotonga. With the Cook Island boarder restrictions open to New Zealand only, it was the perfect time to take a girls trip. We knew the island would not be as busy and we would experience first hand a more raw version of Rarotonga. We unfortunately did not venture to any of the other islands, however used this time to really discover the island of Rarotonga.

Not only did we learn of its absolute true beauty, some of its history was so sad to learn - The ruins of the Sheraton Resort Hotel

Rarotonga is the largest of the Cook Islands, a nation of 15 islands in the central South Pacific. Volcanic peaks, ridges and rainforest dominate its interior. A 32km, round-the-island road links the beaches, coastal lagoon and reefs that make scuba diving and snorkeling popular

Respect What is Not Ours

The ruins of the never completed $80 million Sheraton Rarotonga Resort is a series of derelict hotel buildings.

While there are plenty of beaches to do on the island, we found ourselves strangely drawn to this abandoned hotel on Rarotonga.

Today, the ruins tell a tale of politics, organized crime, and a curse.

In some ways, the abandoned Sheraton Hotel Rarotonga is fascinating; in others a sense of airy and sadness.
